Fatal head-on accident just east of Amarillo
On January 19, 2012, at about 9:30 PM, officers were dispatched to 12,400 E I-40 on a four-car accident.
Upon their arrival they discovered one subject was dead and one had life-threatening injuries. In investigating the collision they discovered that a 2002 Ford Mustang had been eastbound in the 12,400 block of E. I-40. T
he driver of the Mustang, Christopher Easterday, WM, 30, of Amarillo, crossed the center median into the west bound lanes of I-40. The median vaulted Easterday in to oncoming traffic. He struck a 2004 Nissan Frontier driven by Kendrick Ray Powell, BM, 21, of Canyon. T
he Mustang then struck a 2000 Ford Ranger driven by Gustavo Ohara, WM, 48, of Canyon. The Ranger was then struck by a 2006 Chevy Cobalt driven by William Dillehay, WM, 48, of Amarillo.
Easterday was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Powell was pronounced dead at the scene. Ohara and Dillehay were uninjured in the crash. Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in this accident. The incident is being investigated by the Traffic Investigation Division of the Amarillo Police Dept.
